The agency recorded an earthquake near Lebanon, New Jersey, at 10:23 a.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8. This is located approximately 45 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia. Data from the U.S. Geological Survey suggested that over 42 million individuals may have felt the earthquake.

More than half an hour after the earthquake, the emergency notification system for New York City posted on social media that there were no reports of damage or injuries in the city. According to Fabien Levy, Mayor Eric Adams’ spokesperson, he was informed about the earthquake and stated, “Although there are currently no reports of significant effects, we are still evaluating the impact.”

The normal din of traffic in midtown Manhattan intensified, with cars honking their horns on streets that briefly trembled. A loud sound and the shaking of their building were noticed by some inhabitants of Brooklyn. A resident from more earthquake-prone California soothed anxious neighbors in an apartment building in Manhattan’s East Village.

In the Astoria district of New York City, Cassondra Kurtz was massaging her 14-year-old Chihuahua, Chiki, with cocoa butter to alleviate her dry skin. While documenting the event on camera to preserve the memories of the dog’s later years, Kurtz’s flat began to shake so violently that a nine-foot (2.7-meter) mirror hit a wall with a loud crash.

When it originally passed, Kurtz thought it was a large truck.

“I’m from Jersey, so I’m not accustomed to earthquakes,” she further clarified.

She was shown on camera looking about, confused. Chiki on the other hand “was completely unbothered.”

Customers were chatting excitedly about the unexpected earthquake that rocked the concrete counter and rattled dishware at a coffee cafe in lower Manhattan. Barista India Hays remarked, “I noticed the door trembling on its frame.” “I felt that an earthquake couldn’t possibly occur here.”

A strange rumble caught Solomon Byron’s attention as he sat on a park bench in Manhattan’s East Village. Byron stated, “I felt this vibration and I was just like, where is that vibration coming from?” “There are no trains in this area or anywhere similar.” According to Byron, he was unaware of the earthquake until he received a notification on his telephone.
President Joe Biden was briefed on the earthquake, according to a statement from the White House, and he was “in touch with federal, state, and local officials as we learn more.”

Governor of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro stated that state representatives were keeping an eye on the matter. Gov. Ned Lamont of Connecticut does not know of any reports of damage in his state, according to a spokesman.

When there is earthquake activity, residents are asked by Philadelphia police to report anything other than emergencies by not calling 911. State officials were keeping an eye on the situation, according to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Gov. Ned Lamont of Connecticut’s spokeswoman said she was not aware of any damage reports in her state.

Recollections of the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake, which startled tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada, were evoked by the trembling. It was the biggest earthquake to strike the East Coast since World War II, with a magnitude of 5.8. Virginia constituted the epicenter.

Three weeks before the 9/11 terror attacks marked the tenth anniversary, that earthquake shook New Yorkers, caused fractures in the Washington Monument, and prompted the evacuation of the Capitol and White House.
