Younger individuals are increasingly likely to use spectacles in this day and age when our devices control our eyesight. Experts dispute the popular belief that specific diets and physical activities might enhance vision and provide clarity.
IndiaToday spoke with Dr. Parul Sharma, Director & HOD, Eye Care, Ophthalmology, Max Hospital, Gurugram. That is to say, while certain workouts might aid in the synchronization or relaxation of the eye muscles, they don’t dramatically enhance visual acuity or treat underlying vision problems.
“The shape of the eye and the condition of its constituent parts, such as the cornea, lens, and retina, are the main factors influencing vision. Therefore, it is untrue to rely only on food or exercise to improve vision, according to Dr. Parul Sharma.
Although there isn’t a certain food or workout routine that will improve your vision, developing healthy habits is necessary to preserve good vision.
Cut down on screen time
According to Dr. Sharma, extended use of digital screens can cause eye strain and symptoms like dry eyes, blurred vision, and eye fatigue.
By giving your eyes regular breaks from screen time, you can lessen the strain on them and lower your chance of getting computer vision syndrome or digital eye strain.
Make rest your top priority.
Giving your eyes ample rest is the greatest method to improve your vision, according to Dr. Dheeraj Gupta, Senior Consultant in Ophthalmology at Marengo Asia Hospital in Gurugram.
“Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep every night to guarantee your eyes receive enough rest. “If you’re having trouble falling asleep, try closing your eyes to help relax,” advised Dr. Gupta.
A diet in balance
Keeping your eyes healthy overall depends greatly on your diet. The health of the eyes is especially enhanced by certain nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, C, and E.
The antioxidants in these nutrients help prevent cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and other vision-related disorders, in addition to supporting other functions of the eye.
Nutrients for the best possible eye health can be obtained through a balanced diet full of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and healthy fats.
Routine examinations of the eyes
Annual eye exams, according to Dr. Sharma, aid in the early detection of any changes in vision or underlying eye diseases.
An optometrist or ophthalmologist assesses a number of factors related to vision and eye health during an eye exam, such as visual acuity, eye pressure, eye muscle coordination, and the condition of the retina and optic nerve. Early detection of any of these issues allows for prompt treatment, Dr. Sharma continued.
Continue to lubricate your eyes.
“Opt for larger screens, such as tablets or TVs, when streaming content to reduce eye strain and that helps you blink more to avoid dry eyes,” said Dr. Gupta.
No nonprescription drugs
The experts advised against self-medicating with over-the-counter medications and instead to see a doctor as soon as possible for any eye problems. Steroids, which can damage vision if taken incorrectly, are a possible ingredient in some treatments.
All of these techniques help you maintain and strengthen a sharper vision for the rest of your life.
Many people experience problems with dry eyes, which can worsen other health issues down the road. This generally occurs when you stare at the screen for extended periods of time. As a result, the person blinks less frequently throughout the day.
