After suffering their biggest-ever Eredivisie loss on Sunday, losing to rivals Feyenoord 6-0
Ajax’s miserable season took a further turn for the worse.
The highlight matchup in the Dutch league is this matchup between the two teams, known as “The Classic” or “De Klassieker,” although Feyenoord easily defeated their opponents this season due to Ajax’s collapse.
With goals from Igor Paixão, Yankuba Minteh, and David Hancko, Feyenoord led by three goals at halftime. Quinten Timber’s goal was followed by two more goals from Minteh and Paixão in a nine-minute period in the second half that saw the hosts extend their lead.
“We informed one another during the break that we needed to have the courage to play football. But that was not the case. Following the game, Ajax manager John Van’t Schip remarked, “It was just men against pupils today.”
“Today we suffered setbacks on every front. The speed and physicality of the duels. Four goals came via errors made by individuals. That is as a result of the pressure Feyenoord is applying.
“This was quite embarrassing. Every single one of us. Employees and athletes.”
Ajax is now 24 points behind Feyenoord in second place, sitting in sixth place with 45 points as a result of the outcome.
It was their eighth league loss of the season on Sunday.
The Amsterdam team, which fielded a weaker lineup due to the injuries of Brian Brobbey, Steven Berghuis, Jordan Henderson, and Diant Ramaj, entered the match seeking retribution for their 4-0 loss to Feyenoord in the same matchup. They were no match for a Feyenoord team on the rampage, who gave Ajax just one chance on goal while scoring 29 of their own.
After losing, Ajax’s terrible week came to an end. On Tuesday, the team terminated CEO Alex Kroes, who had only been with the company for two weeks, after allegations of insider trading.
