Following Frida Maanum’s fall on the field during the Continental Cup final, Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall stated that his squad aimed to make Maanum “a champion”.
The Norway midfielder tumbled down off the ball during the Gunners’ 1-0 extra-time victory over Chelsea, stopping play for seven minutes.
Frida Maanum was attended to medically prior to being removed on a stretcher.
The 24-year-old was speaking with Eidevall following the game, and Arsenal reported that she was in a “stable condition”.
The manager of the Gunners stated that Maanum’s collapse was “very scary” and continued, saying that Frida is the most important thing to them and that winning is not what matters right after the game.
“But there was nothing we could do to control that situation, we can concentrate on football, and we wanted to make Frida a champion.”
When Eidevall and the Arsenal players observed Maanum on the ground, they instantly motioned for the medical personnel, and Stina Blackstenius and Katie McCabe hurried to her side.
While Maanum was being brought down the tunnel at Molineux after receiving oxygen through a mask, both sets of players stayed on the field.
The play was restarted in the fourteenth extra minute with the score tied at zero goals when Alessia Russo entered the game to replace the midfield player.
“Frida is in a stable state, conversing, and conscious. Our medical staff will continue to keep a careful eye on her,” Arsenal stated.
Blackstenius scored the game-winning goal in the 26th minute of extra time, helping Eidevall’s team win 1-0.
“It’s devastating to see one of your team-mates go down like that,” Russo stated to BBC Sport. We’re all hoping and praying for her.
“I believe it was predetermined by the stars that her closest friend would go and secure the victory on her behalf.
“Frida Maanum uses her entire body when playing and is a huge player. She carried out that action today. All we can pray for is that she is well.”
After leaving Swedish team Linkoping to join Arsenal in 2021, Maanum has made 60 appearances in the Women’s Super League and scored 14 goals.
Winner of the match “It’s always really hard,” Blackstenius said, expressing concern. To all of us, she is a friend and a teammate. She is really important to us.
When things like this occur, you get a little worried. We stated that since she was unable to be with us at that time, we wanted to accomplish this for her and win this victory for her.”
