The attack happened as fans were getting ready for a famous Russian rock band called Picnic to perform in a hall that could hold more than 6,000 people. While reports from Russian news agencies stated that guests were being evacuated, other sources suggested that an unknown number of individuals might have been trapped by the fire.

Several males wearing battle fatigues reportedly entered the music hall and opened fire on guests, according to the prosecutor’s office.

In numerous films uploaded by Russian media and Telegram channels, there were prolonged shots fired. Another featured two armed men walking around the shopping center. Another image included a man inside the theater stating that the attackers had set it on fire, with continuous gunfire audible in the backdrop.

Additional recordings revealed up to four terrorists shooting screaming victims at close range while brandishing assault guns and donning hats.

The governor of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov, declared that he was going to the scene and formed a task group to address the damage.

He did not immediately provide any more information.

According to reports in the Russian media, individuals were being evacuated from the area, and riot police units were being dispatched.

The Moscow mayor called off all the city’s planned large-scale events for the weekend, and Russian officials reported that security had been stepped up at the city’s train and airport terminals.

John Kirby, the White House National Security Advisor, stated on Friday that although he was unable to provide every detail at this time, “the images are just horrible” and simply difficult to watch.

Kirby remarked, “Our thoughts will be with the victims of this terrible, terrible shooting attack.” Some mothers, fathers, siblings, sisters, sons, and daughters have not yet received the news. It’s going to be a difficult day.

The attack happened after the U.S. Embassy in Moscow sent a statement earlier this month asking Americans to stay away from popular areas of the Russian city due to an impending attack. Several other Western embassies also echoed this warning.

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, condemned the Western warnings earlier this week as an attempt to scare Russians. Putin extended his rule over the country for another six years in the presidential elections held on March 15–17 following a massive crackdown on the opposition.
