Except for the two seasons the team was suspended following the 2013 spot-fixing scandal, Dhoni, 42, has captained the Super Kings since the IPL’s inception in 2008.
M.S. Dhoni has resigned from the Chennai Super Kings captaincy. IPL 2024 will see Ruturaj Gaikwad become the team’s captain. Gaikwad has participated in 52 games since joining the team in 2019. When CSK won its fourth championship in 2021, the Maharashtra batter was named the Orange Cap winner. Gaikwad has amassed 1797 runs with a strike rate of 135.52 and an average of 39.06 from 52 games.
Except for the two seasons the team was suspended following the 2013 spot-fixing scandal, Dhoni, 42, has led the Super Kings since the IPL’s inception in 2008. However, he turned over the leadership of the team to Ravindra Jadeja at the beginning of the 2022 season. Still, after eight games, he was back in command.
In 212 IPL games, Dhoni has captained CSK; he has won 128 and lost 82.
Against the Gujarat Titans in the third day of last year’s T20 final in Ahmedabad, Dhoni guided CSK to a record-tying fifth IPL victory. In all T20 competitions, it was also CSK’s eighth championship, second only to Sialkot Stallions (8) and tied with Mumbai and Titans (South Africa).
On August 15, 2020, he made known that he was quitting cricket. He won the World Cup in 2011, the Champions Trophy in 2013, and the World Twenty20 championship in 2007 for India.
