In the 1988 film Beetlejuice, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis played Barbara and Adam Maitland, respectively, who sought Beetlejuice’s assistance in getting the Deetz family out of their house. After a family member passes away, the sequel picks up years later and introduces new characters.

A mystery narrative point—possibly the disappearance of Lydia’s father, Charles Deetz—is alluded to by director Tim Burton in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Burton commends Keaton for taking on the renowned role once more, stating, “It was a little frightening for someone who wasn’t eager to do it. I found seeing the entire ensemble to be so lovely, but he returned to it immediately after, like he was under a demon’s influence.”

According to Burton, Keaton was first apprehensive about going back, but he was drawn in by the emotional appeal of seeing the Deetz women again—Lydia, Delia, and Astrid. “I think we all felt the same way,” he told EW. If there was an emotional hook, then it would make sense.”

The filmmaker acknowledges that they had thought about a number of sequel concepts over the years, but they needed the proper idea to proceed. He said to the publication, “We discussed a wide range of topics early on during our trip, including Beetlejuice and the Haunted Mansion, Beetlejuice Goes West, and other projects. Numerous issues surfaced.

In order to provide a homemade feel that rekindles his passion for filmmaking, Burton affirms that stop-motion animation is used for the iconic Beetlejuice effects. The title is Beetlejuice. Instead of taking the conventional route of a sequel, Beetlejuice was selected for its simplicity.

Beetlejuice On September 6, Beetlejuice will open in theaters, bringing fans back to the eerie world of Beetlejuice in a nostalgic yet new way.
