For the past few years, on April 10th, friends and acquaintances have been posting pictures on social media to celebrate National Siblings Day, turning many feeds into a digital family album of sorts.

National Siblings Day, however, is not frivolous nor driven by commercial interests.

In contrast to many of the unofficial holidays that litter the calendar year, such as Talk Like a Pirate Day and National French Fry Day. Rather, it’s a festival rooted in both deep love and grief.

We got information through other sources about Claudia Evart, the person who created the holiday, as per the sources, the science of siblings. She had an older brother and sister when she was a child. She claims they served as her first true best friends, mentors, and sources of support.

The history of National Siblings Day

Sadly, Evart’s siblings passed away in separate accidents while they were quite young. When she and their father perished in an automobile accident, Lisette, her sister, was just 19 years old. At 17, Evart was. After striking his head in a fall, Alan, Evart’s brother, passed away fourteen years later.

According to Evart, the creation of National Siblings Day was motivated by her desire to pay tribute to her own siblings as well as promote public understanding of the special link shared by siblings. Every year on April 10, it takes place in honor of Lisette’s birthday. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are observed. Why haven’t your siblings received recognition?”

National Siblings Day is not a federal holiday, but according to the Siblings Day Foundation, which Evart started, former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama have all written letters honoring the day.

Evart suggests that in observance of the day, folks give their siblings some extra love. “Let’s make today memorable, whether you’re planning an excursion, recreating old experiences, or just spending time together. Tell your siblings how much they mean to you by reaching out to them, both nearby and far away.
